3 Well Known Black Stars Players Who Came Back To Coach The Senior National Team Of Ghana After Retirement
The senior national team of Ghana has been introduced to some of outstanding football talents who didn’t only make it while playing for foreign football clubs but excelled while playing with some of the best Ghanaian local league teams.
Over the past few decades, we can make mention of a number of talented footballers from the Black Stars team, who did extremely well for the Ghanaian team and eventually returned to take up a coaching job for the team based on their amazing exploits while they were still vibrant players.
In today’s write-up, we will be shifting our focus to three of these exceptional players and their coaching tenure for the Ghanaian team.
First on the list is Coach Akwasi Appiah. Though his actual name is James Akwasi Appiah, his recent coaching job has gradually change his name to coach Akwasi Appiah.
The former Black Stars left defender was appointed as the head coach of the Black Stars in the year 2012.
Though he did his best to take the team to its third World Cup in 2014, he left the his role as coach of the team with mutual consent after the Ghanaian team bowed out of the global tournament at the early stages of the competition.
According to Ghanaian football records, Coach Akwasi Appiah is the first retired Black Stars defender to take up the coaching role of the team and equally taking the team to the World Cup.
At the moment, Akwasi Appiah currently holds the the head coach position of the Kenpong Football Academy, one of the football academies in Ghana that trains young talented footballers who have passion for the sporting activity.
Charles Kwabla Akonnor. C.K Akonnor popularly known as C.K. Akonnor is second on my list.
He is one Black Stars coach most Ghanaian football fans are very familiar with considering at the short term coaching job he was offered by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
After taking over as a former manager of the senior national team of Ghana, C.K Akonnor was officially offered the chance to manage the Black Stars during the early parts of the year 2020.
Unfortunately, his coaching contract was terminated by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after he led the Black Stars to an unconvincing win against the Ethiopian national team and defeat to South Africa’s Bafana Bafana team prior to the 2022 World Cup qualification competition.
Talking of retired Black Stars players, who have returned to take the coach the Ghanaian after retiring from active football, Otto Addo can be considered the most recent successor.
Currently, Otto Addo is the officially recognized manager of the Black Stars team. As part of his dream to make history for Ghanaian team, he is hoping to take the team to an appreciable stage at the 2022 World Cup tournament which will be hosted in Qatar during the months of November and December 2022.
Apart from his role as manager of the senior national team of Ghana, Otto Addo is also recognized as the head coach of a top-class German football club identified by the name Borussia Dortmund.
